This is a village steeped in history with the Memorial Hall, built in 1923 and still very much the centre of the community today. The Downley School, is a combined school with Outstanding Ofsted status. There is also the Woodland Preschool that is well thought of in the village and feeds directly into the local schools.
Downley Common also plays host to a number of sports clubs. There are several local football teams ranging from a junior side, Downley Dynamos, all the way up to the oldest club in the village, Downley Albion Football Club formed in 1885. Both the Dynamos and Albion play home games at Downley Common and share the sports pavilion with the local cricket team.
Not only are there sport clubs in the village there are a number of other clubs and societies to be apart of including; Scout and Guide groups, The Downley Theatre Group, Downley Descants and the Downley Makers Market.
Downley community traditions include the Guy Fawkes Night torch parade, where literally hundreds of people march up the common with tin can torches and throw then into the bonfire. Also there are two Village fetes, one being Downley Day and the other being the Jolities.
The mix of properties range from, original village detached homes surrounding the Common to semi detached 1960’s family homes right through to one-bedroom flats. For those who live in Downley there is not much desire to move out of the village only to move further into the village as family grows or circumstances change. When you live here there is a strong feeling of community and the old-fashioned village feeling of wanting to know your neighbours.
The JNP Partnership is a well-established sales and letting agent in Downley with some members of staff living in the village. This allows our team to talk passionately about why this is somewhere people really should move to whether you are buying, renting or looking to invest in a property.
